Does Getting Divorced Change Your Name Automatically?
No. A decree absolute (or final order) ends your marriage legally, but it doesn't change your name. If you took your spouse's surname when you married and want to go back to using a previous name, you need to take a separate step to make that official.
If You're Reverting to a Name You Used Before
If you're simply reverting to a name you legally held before your marriage, most UK organisations, including HM Passport Office, will accept your decree absolute together with your original marriage certificate or previous passport as evidence, without needing a deed poll at all. This is genuinely the simplest route if it applies to you, and it's worth checking directly with each organisation what they'll accept before ordering anything.
When You Will Need a Deed Poll
A deed poll becomes the more reliable option if:
- You want to choose a completely new name, not simply revert to a former one
- You're changing your first name as well as your surname
- An organisation specifically asks for a deed poll rather than accepting your decree absolute
- You want one single, unambiguous document that every organisation will accept without needing to explain your marital history

After You've Signed Your Deed Poll
Once signed and witnessed, use it (or your decree absolute, where accepted) to update your name with:
- HM Passport Office
- DVLA
- HMRC
- Your bank(s) and building society
- Your employer
- Your local council, mortgage provider and insurers
