Legally change your name by Deed Poll
Welcome to the official site of the UK Name Change Service. Here you will find all of the information you need on how to legally and officially change your own or your child’s name.
People living in the United Kingdom have the right to legally change their name at any time and for any reason by executing (signing) a document called a Deed of Change of Name, which is more commonly known and referred to as a Deed Poll.
Using a Deed Poll you can change any part of your own or your child’s name – you can add names, remove names, or rearrange your existing names; you can even adopt a totally different name.
For child name changes you will need to seek permission from everyone with parental responsibility for the child before the change can take place. We cover the issue of parental responsibility as well as the other issues related to name changes in our article called Changing a child’s legal name – we highly recommend that you read it before submitting your application.
Deed Poll guarantee
Deed Polls issued by UK Name Change Service are guaranteed to be accepted by all government agencies, private companies and other organisations within the United Kingdom. If you experience any problems with the acceptance of your Deed Poll, we will immediately issue you with a full refund in accordance with the guarantee.
