Welcome to the UK Name Change Service

Hello and welcome to the official website of the UK Name Change Service. Here you will find all of the information you need about how to officially and legally change either your own name, or a child’s name.

Any resident of the United Kingdom may officially change their name to whatever they like by executing (signing in the presents of a witness) a document called a Deed of Change of Name which is more commonly known as a Deed Poll. There are absolutely no legal restrictions on the name you can choose or how often you can change it.

Please note, if a child (someone under the age of 16) wishes to change their name by Deed Poll, a person with parental responsibility must apply on their behalf for a child Deed Poll. Furthermore, everyone with parental responsibility for the child must consent to the name change taking place. For more information on the specific issues relating to child name changes, please click here.

What is a Deed Poll?

Deeds of Change of Name have been in use in the United Kingdom for over 150 years with hundreds of thousands of people using them. Due to the popularity of Deed Polls, they are widely accepted as evidence of a name change which means that we can guarantee that your Deed Poll, issued by us, will be accepted by all government agencies, private companies and other organisations within the UK.

The process of applying for a Deed Poll is very straight forward and simple. Please use the apply now link at the top of this page to start your application.
