What Is A Deed Poll Used For?

Anyone living in the United Kingdom who is over the age of 16 can change their name simply by asking others to call them by their new name.

If you would like your new name to be shown on official documents and records such as your Passport, Driving License and Bank Account you will need to provide &quoot;documentary evidence" of your change of name. A Deed Poll is a legal document proving that you have changed your name and as such provides the documentary evidence required when asking that your documents and records are amended.

You can use a Deed Poll in the same way that a recently married woman would use her marriage certificate to have her documents and records amended to show her husbands surname. The woman would write to everyone that holds her personal records, enclosing her marriage certificate as documentary evidence, asking them to change their records to show her new surname. Similarly, when changing your name by Deed Poll, you write to everyone that holds your personal records, enclosing your Deed Poll as documentary evidence, requesting that they change their records to show the new name mentioned on your Deed Poll.
